5 Safety Features That Help Senior Drivers

Many seniors love the open road, which is why so many car manufacturers provide safety features that support seniors to be safe on the road. As you age it is important to take care of yourself and find ways to get extra support. Just as extra support is needed for driving extra assistance could be needed for living as well, there are multiple assisted living facilities that may be suitable for an individual to look into, check it out here, should they find out that they need support both in a home environment and on the road. Road safety is highly important for all drivers, but with seniors, their reaction times can be a lot slower resulting in some issues, however, as long as they are aware and do what they can to help themselves such as laser eye surgery (check over here to learn more) so they can better their eyesight, as well as take advanced courses, then they should be able to drive efficiently. Today though we see what manufacturers can do for them. Technology has come a long way over the years which is why now more than ever it is safer for seniors to be on the road. To highlight these safety features, I am going to list 5 safety features that can help senior drivers.

    Push Button Start

It can be hard for seniors with arthritis to find a physical key and put it into the ignition. A push-button start could support seniors in their driving lives, so they do not have to find a key or try to use it. Instead, the car unlocks at the touch of the handle, and they can start the car with the touch of a button. This suggests that they will not have to spend time alone in a car park trying to start their car.

    Reversing Cameras

It can be challenging for seniors to see over the seat and look behind them. They are not as flexible as they once were, and many seniors struggle with serious back pain. A camera looking behind them can help seniors feel more confident and comfortable about the whole procedure of reversing. It might take some time for seniors to adjust and rely on a reversing camera, but once such adjustments have been made, seniors will wonder how they ever managed to drive for all those years without one.

    Power Adjustable Seats

If you have ever struggled with trying to reach down and yank to adjust a manual seat, you understand how fantastic power-adjustable seats are to use. For seniors who could struggle to reach the manual levers or pushing their own body weight against the seat, power-adjustable seats can save a lot of stress and ensure a better line of sight.

A seat that is so low the driver cannot see over the steering wheel can easily become a safety hazard. Models that can save the settings of multiple drivers can be great for drivers who co-own or share vehicles with other drivers. On the other hand, setting the seat too high can also cause discomfort, so being given the option to electronically adjust the seats will aid seniors to get the right configuration for them.

    Lane Departure Warnings

Lane departure and collision warnings have become premium safety features for anyone who is buying a new car. But they are especially important for senior drivers. Even if seniors do not want to spend extra money upgrading to a model with other features, many seniors want a vehicle that can let them know about potential safety concerns while on the road. For seniors who can be anxious about navigating the fast-paced roads, these safety features can give them a greater sense of confidence.
However, in case there is a collision and the senior driver suffers an injury, they might need extra care after the treatment. Keeping handy the contact of some home care service providers similar to In-Home Senior Care Services in Bethlehem, PA, might prove helpful. More so, if the senior member lives away from their families.

    Heated Seats

Heated seats and steering wheels are great for every driver, especially in the winter when it can get incredibly cold outside. However, for seniors with conditions like arthritis or autoimmune disorders, heated seats can help relieve hip, back, or leg discomfort and pain. A driver that is more comfortable is in a better position to focus on the road around them instead of the pain that they might be struggling with.

However, there might be a situation where, despite being cautious, drivers get involved in an accident and sustain injuries due to the negligence of others. In such cases, they might document the evidence and reach out to insurance providers for attaining a proper settlement. Alternatively, taking the help of a Top-rated Dallas car accident lawyer or a similar professional at other places can help in receiving the necessary financial support for the recovery.

To conclude, there is a wide range of useful safety features for seniors. Seniors should look to invest in technologies like reverse cameras and lane departure warning signallers to improve their visibility of other vehicles and objects around them when looking to move. In addition, taking advantage of technologies like heated and power-adjustable seats will support seniors to feel comfortable and confident behind the wheel. In an unfortunate event of meeting with an accident, it is a good practice to claim insurance or compensation by hiring a suitable lawyer.

  • Early Signs of Transmission Failure

    Early Signs of Transmission Failure

Welcome back, guys! I hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year with your families. Hopefully, 2021 will be a far better year compared to last, with Covid hopefully leaving us for good! Onwards and Upwards as they say!

    ————————————————–

Taking care of your car is critical to get the most out of your investment. The last thing you should do with your investment is to ignore it. It requires maintenance, so keeping a keen eye and ear on what is happening with your car’s transmission can help you catch them before you end up stranded on the side of the road. To help you identify these, I am going to give you some early signs of transmission failure.

    Whining and Clunking

This is one of the more obvious ones but needs to be reiterated regardless. Whining and clunking can easily be ignored with some loud music blasting over it, which we are all guilty of doing from time to time. When your car starts making noises it should not be making, it is time to get it checked out. You will probably hear a humming or buzzing coming from your transmission. When this happens, do not wait, get it fixed. Fix it sooner rather than later because it can cause more damage the longer it is left.

    Lack of Response

Your transmission was designed so that you can switch gears instantaneously. So when there is a noticeable delay and it does not do what it was designed to do straight away, it is time to get it looked at. It can even feel a bit sluggish in its response and still warrant a checkout, do not delay as it could cost you more in the long run. One thing to note, though, is that if your car has a turbo fitted, there will be some lag between you feeling the full power your car can provide, as the turbo draws in air to spool up and this can take a second or two!

    Burning Smell

The smell of something burning is never a good sign in a lot of situations but especially when it is coming from your car. The cause could be a wide range of thing, but it is often due to overheating of the transmission fluid. Do not panic when this happens, but make sure you take it to a professional as soon as you can.

    Leaking Fluid

Fluid, where it should not be, is a tell-tale sign so look out for it. The best way to find where the leak is coming from is to lie down on a few bits of cardboard when the car is parked. Then slide out the pieces to see where your car is leaking. Be sure to share this information with any vehicle professional you take your vehicle too when you seek expert assistance.

    Grinding Gears

This symptom manifests itself differently for manual and automatic transmissions. For manual transmissions, when you change gears and you hear or feel a sense of grinding; it could mean that you have just worn the clutch and you need to replace it.

But it can also mean that one of the transmission’s synchronizers is worn out and damaged. For the automatic drivers, if your automatic transmissions end us feeling like a rough shift rather than an unnoticeable one it could be caused by a huge variety of things. Check with an expert if you notice this.

When facing complex issues like grinding gears or rough shifts, a thorough diagnostic by experienced technicians is crucial to pinpoint the exact problem. Ignoring these early warning signs can lead to more extensive and costly damage down the line. For reliable transmission repair in Edmonton, seeking out a reputable service center ensures your vehicle receives the specialized attention it needs. Expert mechanics can provide comprehensive solutions, from routine maintenance to complete rebuilds, restoring your car’s smooth performance on the road.

    Dashboard Lights

Perhaps the clearest indicator that something is wrong is the “SERVICE ENGINE SOON” light on your dashboard. If those are the last words you see when you get out of your car you should seriously consider doing something about it. This could mean almost anything but does not mean it should be ignored. There are sensors placed throughout your car’s engine for a reason so do not procrastinate away from addressing them.

To recap, there is a whole range of issues that could signify that your car’s transmission is on the way out. That is why you need to do your best to keep a track of your car’s health. If you do not, then you will end up paying for it in the end. Pay attention to your car, and be aware of any odd sound (or smell for that matter) it makes. In most cases, the wear and and tear show up in the axle, transmission and engine block. In case your car’s transmission requires a replacement, you have two choices. You could either get hold of an old but working transmission, or buy a new one altogether. In case you are looking for a used transmission, then auto part web stores (like SirCarPart) might be a good starting point.

  • 4 Tips for Buying your First Car

4 Tips for Buying your First Car

Shopping for a used car is like going on a bit of a treasure hunt. You are never quite sure what you will get. Sure, there are amazing deals out there, and with the emergence of the internet as a car shopping tool, you have so many more options, which has its pros and cons. But one of those pros is that you can find a good deal on a car that meets your needs and budgets.

    Set Your Budget

There are two main approaches to buying a car. You can either take out a loan or pay with cash. If you are paying with cash, budgeting is straightforward, just don’t forget to account for any additional add-ons like a Peragon pickup cover if you’re wanting to buy a truck. It’s also important that you do not spend all your savings. Remember to set aside money for registration insurance – and possible future repairs.

If you’re currently looking at your savings and don’t have enough money to buy the car you want, consider buying an older model. If you’ve still not got enough then it would be a good idea to start budgeting better and putting away a certain amount of money each month. There are plenty of ways to save money nowadays so whether you go to sites like https://www.raise.com/coupons/target to save on your weekly shop, take a “staycation” instead of jetting off somewhere, or eat out less, you’ll be well on your way to save enough money for the car you want.

Buying a new car can be an expensive affair if you want to make a cost-efficient purchase, you could consider opting for a refurbished car. Considering that you saved up money to buy your first car, you would have to be wise and find the best option in the given price range. You would find many models like the Volkswagen Polo, Hyundai i20, and ford focus for sale essex, depending on what your car preferences are. Regardless, all these models are known to offer a good car driving experience, and they should cater to different consumer requirements — adequate space with regard to interiors, satisfactory engine performance, good grip and traction on the road, and fuel efficiency to cite a few. In addition, you could enjoy most of the benefits at half the price should you find a good dealer.

Many people take out a car loan so they can protect their savings and buy a more expensive model. It is smart to look for a preapproved car loan because it makes the buying process easier and puts you in a strong position at the car dealership.

Use an auto loan calculator to compute the best loan for you. Plan to put about 10% down and finance the car for three years. If you can, the total of your monthly auto expenses should not be more than 20% of your monthly budget.

    Finding the Right Car

With your budget set, you can now start hunting for your car. Take some time to think about how you plan to use this car. For example, if you have a family, you will want to factor that into your car choice. Having the right space for your family will make it easier for you to get the most out of your car.

Focus in on making a must-have list. Then, search for models that match as much of that must-have list, within your budget. There are plenty of useful car finder apps online that can help you browse through a variety of models to figure out what you can get for your money. When you find a few for the maybe pile, research those models in more detail. For example, when I was looking for my first car, if you haven’t already seen, I found a Renault Turbo 5. It met everything I was looking for at the time, which is most important. Nowadays, it would be no good because I have a family!

    Check Reliability and Ownership Costs

Every used car is different. Some have been driven a lot of miles and could have more wear and tear. But, as a general rule, you want to make sure you are choosing models known for their dependability. There are plenty of consumer reports online that can help you create a better picture of how a model can perform. Moreover, if you are looking for a second-hand car, you might want to choose a car dealership that uses cloud-based software (which can be found at https://xtime.com/xtime-spectrum/) for auto repair shop management to make sure that you have an outstanding ownership experience. This will ensure that the car dealership provides a satisfactory level of services required for you to have a peaceful time with your second-hand car.

Besides this, also look for the total cost of ownership. Some cars are cheaper to buy, but you will end up paying a lot more if you buy a car that has a lot of issues with it. You can also expect higher insurance costs, but be sure to check out this car insurance list uk so you can see which companies will be able to help you find the least expensive insurance plan for your vehicle, allowing you to save as much money as you possibly can. There are a bunch of automotive websites that can help you understand the total cost of ownership of the models you are interested in.

    Check the Vehicle History Report

Before you drive to the car you are interested in, run a vehicle history report. Using the vehicle identification number (VIN), you can get a detailed report of the car’s history. Depending on your area, there are great online options to use when you need too. It is a quick way to know if you should seriously consider buying this car.

In some cases, online classifieds will have links to free vehicle history reports. If not, it is worth it to buy one. It can save you a lot of money in the long term.

Here is some of the information you will learn:

    • Does this car have a clean title? If a car’s been in a serious accident, fire, or flood, and it was considered no longer road worthy by the insurance company, it still might be driveable. However, the insurance company will issue a “salvage title” to alert future buyers. Steer clear of cars with a salvage title because it kills the resale value, and the car might still have hidden problems.
    • Serious accidents are reported to the insurance company and will probably be on the vehicle history report.
    • Shady car lots might spin the odometer back to increase the selling price. If you discover this is true steer clear. They have probably hidden a lot of other issues as well.
    • It is nice to think the car you are interested in was driven to church by a little old lady for its entire life. If you order the report, you will know for sure each time changed hands.
    • Some reports show if required maintenance was done on time and where the work was performed. This will help you understand what you might need to do.

To summarize, when buying a used car there are a lot of factors to take in mind. Understanding how much money you must spend on a car is important. Alongside knowing what you are getting yourself in for by utilizing great tools out there. Cost of ownership should be considered as well.

  • 3 Signs Your Tyres Are Worn

3 Signs Your Tyres Are Worn

You might decide to take your car out for a drive one day and noticed something way off. The handling feels a little heavy, perhaps you hear an odd rubbery sound coming from the bottom of your car. But even if you do not experience any issues you might still need to get your tyres replaced. Car Tyres often don’t give you too much warning of when they are run down and needing a replacement, so it’s best to know the signs before it’s too late – so you can avoid a tyre burst. Because of this, I am going to share 5 signs that your tyres are worn.

    Lack of Tread Depth

A shiny new set of tyres come with at least 8mm of tread to help them maintain good contact with the road. Over time, however, this will wear away. It is your job to ensure that the tread does not fall below a certain depth. There is a straightforward way to check the tread depth of your tyres, and you do not need something silly like a tape measure. Take a 20p piece and put it in the main groove of the tread. If you can see the outer ring of the coin, it means that your tyres are too worn. Do this a few times in different areas around the tyre, just in case there is uneven wear.

If you are lucky enough, your tyres might also have tread depth indicators. They are pretty handy, as they let you check the read depth at a glance. Do not forget that it is a legal requirement to have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm. This should be in a continuous band around the tyre. If you are caught driving with tyres that do not meet this requirement, you could end up with a fine and points on your licence. Expect to be penalised per tyre, so if all your tyres are far outside of the acceptable range, you could face a maximum fine of 10,000 and 12 points.

    You Have Old Tyres

It is important that you regularly monitor the condition of your tyres. But after crossing the five-year mark, they should ideally be checked by tyre shop experts. And once your tyres reach their 10th birthday, from the date they were manufactured – they will probably need to be replaced. Even if they seem fine, it is still a wise idea to get a new set.

You can also tell when it is time to replace your tyres with their mileage. Double-check the manufacturer’s suggestions for how many miles your tyres can travel before they need swapping. On average, tyres should last around 25,000 miles, but there are other factors that influence this number.

You will reduce the number of miles you get out of your tyres if you brake harshly or drive over rough roads. When it comes to replacing your tyres, there are a number of options you can choose from. Selecting the best budget tyres for your vehicle can be a cost-effective alternative to buying brand new high performance tyres. All tyres must also pass a safety regulation test, so rest-assured this option will still provide adequate performance for every driving needs.

    Shaky Driving

Can you feel a lot more vibrations than usual when you are on the open road? There could be a range of issues causing this, from a faulty shock absorber to issues with wheel alignment, but it can also be your tyres.

If there is not enough tread depth, you are going to have a bumpy experience on the road. If you are not sure whether the level of vibration is normal, see if you can find a newly resurfaced section of the road. If it is still shaky and loud when you move onto the smoother part of the road, you need to get that checked out.

To conclude, keeping a close eye on your tyres is important when owning your own vehicle. Neglect can easily lead to issues snowballing, possibly putting yourself and other road users at risk. So, make sure you often check the tread depth of your tyres, along with any other abnormality in your tyres.

  • 6 Tips for Getting the Best Sound Quality in Your Car

6 Tips for Getting the Best Sound Quality in Your Car

One of the best places to enjoy your music is in the car, but many drivers tolerate subpar sound quality that they would never put up with at home, especially the audiophiles among us. When did it become okay to invest in a quality sound system like you can get from this site https://www.vizio.com/en/shop/sound-bar for your home, but not your car? Those audiophiles that do decide to try and make a change, often make common installation mistakes that bottleneck your systems ability to produce amazing results. Therefore, I am going to give you my top 6 tips for getting better sound quality out of your car.

    Replace Your Car’s Speakers

Often, the speakers that come with the car is usually an afterthought for car manufacturers. While default car speakers have improved as of late, they still do not hold a candle to speakers that have been designed to output better quality. Replacing speakers will also give you the most bang for your buck and the difference is stark if you find the right speakers. Often though, this is only in cars that aren’t from ‘premium’ brands as such. For example, in most premium brands like Audi, Mercedes and BMW, you can opt for a more premium sound system, from the likes of Bose and Bang and Olufsen.

    Pick Higher Quality Audio Files

Audio files played through your earbuds might sound fine, but they will often come with a higher level of compression. This compression will often lose some of the high and low-frequency information in those audio tracks. This will probably not be as noticeable with worse speakers but if have great car speakers then you will be able to hear the difference between audio files.

    Bypass your Audio Player’s Built-in Digital-to-Analog Converter

A digital-to-analogue converter, or DAC, has the role of converting digital data from 1’s and 0’s into an analogue audio signal. Often, your audio player is probably your iPhone or Android phone. Its built-in DAC usually does a decent job for casual listening with earbuds, but it does not deliver the same level of performance you can get out of the more advanced DACs found in high-quality car stereos. You will hear the difference when you make the switch.

    Use Sound Deadening Material

Road noise and vibrations affect the quality of your sound. These external sounds can overpower frequencies your speakers are putting out that adds to the clarity of high- and low-end frequencies. This is a bigger issue when the speakers are in a car door that has a plastic casing around it that can easily rattle. Adding some sound-deadening material can reduce that rattle and keep the sounds that you do not want to interrupt your audio out of your ears.

    Add a Car Amplifier

Many friends have asked me how they get more power in their bass for their speakers. I usually tell them to get a car amplifier. If you do not have the juice to push through your new speakers, you are leaving performance on the table. A separate amplifier will provide more clean power than any car stereo, and that will make a night-and-day difference to your sound quality. Your sound system will sound so much better.

Add a Signal Processor or an Equalizer

The interior of a car presents some serious problems when it comes to sound quality. They are not exactly built for perfect acoustics. Glass and plastic surfaces reflect sound which will muddy what you are hearing. Both carpet and seat covers thankfully have the opposite effect, but it still is not ideal for us audiophiles. Therefore, an equalizer (EQ) is a great addition for your car. With an EQ, you can filter out the reflects you are getting in your car to improve the sound quality.

To conclude, there is a wide range of things you can do to improve your cars audio quality. But the best approach is to do is assess the acoustics in your car? Do you get a bunch of reflects that distract you when you are listening to music? Understanding your needs will go a long way to help you make the right decision with car audio upgrades.

  • 4 Essential Car Maintenance Tips

    4 Essential Car Maintenance Tips

Car maintenance is an important aspect of car ownership. Understanding how to take care of your vehicle while improving the longevity of your car and reduce the amount you will have to pay in repairs. Prevention is always cheaper than paying to fix an issue after the fact. Therefore, I am going to give you 4 essential car maintenance tips, as well as letting you know that blogs such as https://www.sprawlway.org/, can offer insight into how to maintain your car so you are not forking out a lot of money for something preventable.

    Check Tire Pressures

Poor tire pressures often lead to awful fuel economy. In addition, it can affect comfort and handling. Checking your owner’s manual will help you ensure the right PSI for your tires. There are plenty of gadgets and basic tools you can use to check your tires pressure. If you have the time, this should be done on a weekly basis, although making it part of your daily routine will not hurt.

Some cars have tire pressure monitoring technology installed before they leave the factory. There are also some great gadgets that connect with mobile devices that constantly monitor tire pressure and send out notifications in case one or more tires need some air.

    Check Oil Levels

Your car’s engine has a lot of mechanical moving parts that create friction as they brush against each other. This friction generates heat, and this can wear an engine down and reduce performance. Therefore, minimizing, if not eliminating, friction from these moving parts is critical to ensure smoother operation.

Otherwise, you would need to experience loud noises or knocking from your engine and even substantial reduction in fuel economy. Checking your engine’s oil level should thus be made an important part of car maintenance. It is easy. Find the oil dipstick, pull it out, and evaluate the oil. Moreover, if you encounter any issues with the oil in your engine, it is worth reaching out to a mechanic by researching mechanics in your area on websites such as stevesorsenmechanical.com.au for instance.

    Replace Spark Plugs

If your car’s engine has a rough idle or misfires from time to time, you might want to replace your spark plugs. Other symptoms of a malfunctioning spark plug can include lack of acceleration, trouble starting your car, often high fuel consumption, or even engine surging. In an ideal world, you need to replace your spark plugs every 30,000 or so miles if it is just a standard copper spark plug.

However, if yours is of the more advanced iridium spark plug, then these can last up to around 100,000 miles which can reduce the among you will be spending in the long-term often. But do not forget, you need to double-check your vehicle owner’s manual or even your car maintenance checklist to determine when you should replace your spark plugs.

    Properly Disconnect Batteries

To further improve your understanding of your car’s electrics, you need to know how to disconnect your battery. Disconnecting your battery terminals could be an easy task. It is all a matter of unfastening the bolts that keep the cables secure onto the battery terminals, right? But there is a proper way to do it. You do not just disconnect the first connector that your hands are able to reach.

Always disconnect the negative terminals first to help prevent the chances of electrical short circuit. This cuts the return path of the electric current. If you disconnect the positive terminal first, currently is still pretty much moving along the negative terminal. If by accident, you dropped your wrench and it landed on the positive terminal and one of its ends also touched any other metal, then you have a complete circuit. Removing the negative end of the connector will help prevent short-circuiting. Even if your tools drop on either battery terminals or touches anything else on the car, there simply is no return for the current to complete the circuit.

As you can see, changing a battery is not super easy. If you are not confident with this and do not want to risk short-circuiting your battery, work with a professional mechanic.

Ultimately, these basic car maintenance tips can help you troubleshoot a range of issues with you might encounter with your car. By being able to maintain your car, you will reduce the amount you have to pay overall, hopefully, saving you a lot of money in the long run!

  • 3 Motorcycle Maintenance Tips

    3 Motorcycle Maintenance Tips

When you are caring for your motorcycle, a little do-it-yourself elbow grease can save you a bunch of money and help keep you safe but also empower you, especially if you own a machine like mine (check the post image!). Many of my friends who own motorcycles have said that they like knowing they are the caretaker of their own machines. They gain a sense of confidence knowing that their motorcycle is in good shape. It can also help to avoid accidents on the road (but check out this link just in case you are involved in an accident). Because of the benefits involved in regular maintenace, I am going to give you 3 motorcycle tips you can do yourself.

    Change Oil

To keep your engine running properly, you will need to change the oil after several thousand miles, double-check the owner’s manual if you are not sure how often you should change it. To begin, you will want to ride the bike a little first to warm it. This will make the oil less viscous.

With the engine off and the bike standing upright, remove the drain plug as well as the oil fill plug, letting the oil runoff into a drain pan. (You may need to remove some fairing to reach the drain plug, your mileage may vary.) Also, take out the oil filter. Be careful, this can get messy! Try covering the engine and/or exhaust section with aluminium foil to protect against drippage.) Once the oil is drained, install a new oil filter, put back any bits and bobs you might have previously removed, and refill using a funnel to avoid spillage. Replace the oil fill cap and recycle the used oil at a bike shop or municipal facility.

    Replace the Air Filter

If your motorcycle’s air filter, which works to keep your engine clean of debris, is full of dirt, your bike will suffer because of it. Swapping an air filter is not a difficult task, but it can be a time-consuming one. So, make sure you set aside the right amount of time to get it done properly. Sometimes the air filter is easily accessible, but you may have to remove the gas tank and other parts to get at it. Once you get into the airbox, take out and replace the air filter. Then reinstall anything you removed.

    Maintain Tire Pressure and Tread

To check a tire’s pressure, find the valve stem on the inside of the wheel, remove the cap, and press an air pressure gauge onto the valve stem. Compare the pressure with what it should be, that information will be written on the side of the tire. Use an air compressor, you can find these at most gas stations, to fill the tire to the correct number of pounds per square inch (PSI).

Let out some air if you over-inflate. Do not forget to replace the valve stem cap when you are done. To see how your tread is doing, check the tire’s wear indicator, it is a little rubber knob that resides in the grooves of the tire. If the knob is at the same level as the rubber that meets the road, then you need to replace that tire. A professional mechanic should be your next stop with your motorcycle. In cases where poor tire maintenance leads to an incident, consulting a Motorcycle Accident Lawyer could help you understand your legal options and rights.

To conclude, all motorcycle owners, including myself, love the freedom our bikes give us – so why not treat them right with some immediate TLC. Changing the oil, replacing the air filter, and maintaining tire pressure are some of the easier DIY things you can do for your motorbike. If you take care of your bike and read your manuals to make sure you are doing it correctly, your bike will last a lot longer than it would otherwise. Giving you plenty more road trips ahead of you.

If you passed your driving test before the end of 1996, then you will train your entitlement to drive a vehicle and trailer combination of up to 8,250 kg MAM (Maximum Authorised Mass), until that licence expires. On your 70th birthday the rules change a bit if you want to keep towing. Do your research if you find yourself towing at 70 years or older.

To be able to legally tow a heavier caravan, you will need to pass an additional driving test to gain the B+E classification, allowing you to drive a combination with a combined maximum mass of 7,000kg. For more information, check out the DVSA’s website.

Beyond the legal and practical aspects of towing, selecting the right caravan is a significant decision that impacts your entire caravanning experience. Whether you’re a first-time buyer or looking to upgrade, understanding the various types and sizes available is crucial for a comfortable journey. Many enthusiasts find that exploring options for used caravans for sale offers excellent value, allowing them to find a model perfectly suited to their needs and budget. Reputable dealers often provide comprehensive support, from expert advice on choosing the ideal layout to flexible financing and part-exchange services.

    On the Road

When you are towing, you will need to give yourself more time and space for everything. It is best to brake earlier than normal and you will probably accelerate slower with a caravan on the back. The extra length of your outfit means you will need to take corners more widely than normal, so the caravan wheels do not clip the kerb or cut the corner or worse, your caravan hitting someone.

Do not forget that the legal speed limits are often lower when you are towing. Do not exceed 50mph on single carriageways or 60mph on dual carriageways. You may not tow in the furthest right (‘outside’” lane of a three-or-more lane motorway unless instructed to do so.

It is a legal requirement to always have a good view to the rear of your unit, which will mean using extension mirrors in the vast majority of situations. Do not forget to take them off when you are not towing. They can be a real issue for regular driving so try not to forget.

Never carry passengers in the caravan when you are towing it. It is theoretically legal to transport animals inside a caravan, but I personally would not recommend it. It is not fun for the animal and you will likely have to clean up its mess left from the drive.

The number plate on the back of your caravan must show your car’s registration number, conform to the relevant British Standard, and make sure it is illuminated at night. This means no DIY registration plates! Your rear light panel must always be working. Do not forget to check before driving off and keep an eye out for anything that changes during your journey.

Your car must show that the indicators are working while you are driving. This might be done positively (by a special light flashing or a buzzer sounding when your indicators are on) or negatively (by giving a warning if a bulb fails).

If you find traffic is building up behind you, pull over at a lay-by or other suitable place, when it is safe to do so, and let the other vehicle pass. Park carefully where you will not obstruct other drivers. Caravans must not be parked in meter bays.

Breakdowns can still happen, so have a clear plan for getting help without putting yourself or other road users at risk. For very large units — such as motorhomes, horseboxes or caravans hitched to heavy vehicles — standard roadside cover may not be sufficient; specialist heavy-recovery teams are often required to recover and transport large trailers safely. For readers travelling in the Atlanta area, services like King’s Towing provide heavy-duty wreckers and experienced crews who handle RVs, buses and trucks with damage-minimising recovery techniques. Keeping the contact details of a capable recovery provider to hand can save time and reduce stress if you become stranded.

In summary, driving with a caravan can be a lot of fun. It opens local holiday opportunities but also requires a sensible driver. There is no replace for risky driving when you are towing a caravan because you could do a lot of damage to other people. This is why the B+E classification is a requirement for driving one.

  • Petrol vs Diesel – Which Engine is Best?

Petrol vs Diesel – Which Engine is Best?

Choosing between a petrol or a diesel-powered car is one of the first things you need to think about when buying a new car. What is going to be the best for how you drive, for the environment and your wallet? Is getting a service on a petrol engine going to be much different to a diesel engine service? Because of this, I am going to give you some tips to help you decide between a petrol or diesel engine for your new car.

    Assessing your motoring needs

From a financial angle, there is now less and less difference between petrol and diesel cars. It is still true that if you look at pure fuel running costs, a diesel will cost less. You will have to have high annual mileages and use motorways frequently to see the financial benefits.

This is because newer diesel vehicles now have higher tax, which can cost almost as much as the fuel savings you could make in a year, and there are worries over air pollution that can be caused by diesels. Checking out car tax prices can help you understand if potential car purchases are affected by tax prices.

It is also true that a diesel vehicle will typically cost more than the equivalent petrol car. Diesel fuel also costs more than petrol. So you will need to work out if this saving in fuel consumption will offset the extra expense of a diesel car and its running costs. For example, if you drive a diesel car more than 12,000 miles in a year, you could recoup a thousand dollars in a couple of years.

But if your mileage is around 6,000 miles a year it could take up to around four years to see the same kind of financial benefit. With the new rules surrounding tax on diesel cars, and some cities due to increasing the penalties for diesel, resell values of diesels will probably be a bit lower, especially if you decide to change your car within the next 5 years.

That means that if most of your journeys are local and your mileage is small, a small petrol car might make more financial sense. Especially if you are the kind of person who likes to drive a car until it dies. Also, keep in mind that newer types of diesel have a special filter fitted to help prevent pollution. It is called a diesel particulate filter or DPF. These can clog if the vehicle is not regularly used on a motorway and is costly to fix or replace. That said, you might be able to find some cheap car parts online uk or U.S if your DPF does need changing.
In conclusion, if you do not use motorways regularly, a diesel might not be for you.

    Petrol Engines

    Pros of Petrol

    • Financially: petrol is cheaper than diesel fuel and the cars tend to be slightly cheaper to buy and service. This is because there are generally more petrol cars on the road, so it is easier to source parts for repairs and maintenance aiding to keep the prices down.
    • Environmental: While CO2 emissions are higher than diesel, petrol cars produce less dangerous emissions that are not CO2 bases, like nitrogen for instance.
    • Driving experience: Petrol engines are usually less noisy than their diesel counterparts.

    Cons of Petrol

    • Financial: Petrol engines are less efficient and use more fuel than diesel, especially at higher speeds on motorways.
    • Environmental: Petrol engines emit more CO2 than diesel cars.
    • Driving experience: Petrol engines need the driver to change gear more regularly, for example when overtaking, to make sure the engine has enough power to quickly and safely overtake. But this is a matter of personal taste, some prefer it.

    Diesel Engines

    Pros of Diesel

    • Financially: diesel engines are more efficient and use up to 20% less fuel suggesting cheaper running costs. The cars typically tend to have a slightly higher resale value as well, but this has been changing as of late.
    • Environment: lower CO2 emissions mean that diesel cars from before April 2017 gets a lower tax band than petrol engine cars and this could be determined based on the mileage of the vehicle (head to https://mileiq.com/blog-en-us/mileage-deduction to learn about mileage tax deduction). For newer diesel cars though, tax is typically higher than for petrol.
    • Driving experience: diesel cars offer more low-speed torque which means they have better overtaking power and fair better with towing-related tasks.

    Cons of Diesel

    • Financial: diesel cars usually cost more than petrol. Diesel fuel is more expensive than petrol and servicing or fixing a big issue in a diesel car can be a bit more expensive. New diesel cars also cost more to tax than petrol cars, and depreciation is now a little higher. There are several new charges, such as the London T-Charge and Ultra Low Emissions Zone, that will make it more expensive if you plan on driving in those areas.
    • Environmental: despite lower CO2 emissions, diesel fuel produces tiny particles linked to breathing disorders such as asthma.
    • Driving experience: diesel engines tend to be slightly noisier, but with newer models this issue is addressed.

    Conclusion

To conclude, the choice comes down to what kind of journeys you will be regularly doing. If you are only doing short trips to the shop or supermarket, then a petrol engine makes perfect sense. On the other hand, if you are driving on motorways the whole time you will see savings with a diesel car.

  • How to Get the Best Fuel Economy Out of Your Car

How to Get the Best Fuel Economy Out of Your Car

Your driving style will make a big difference to your fuel economy. Even when fuel prices are low, you can still save a bunch of money by making a few adjustments to your driving style and habits. Therefore, I am going to share with you some of tips to keep in mind when you are out on the road. Just implementing a couple of these could lead to less money spent on fuel.

So how do you Cut Fuel Costs?

Reduce your speed. There has been plenty of studies done that show that slowing down can save you a lot of money. The biggest savings can be found on the motorway because higher speeds usually require more fuel. Some of these studies measured fuel mileage while driving at a steady 55, 65 and 75 mph in a Honda Accord, three versions of a Ford Fusion, which included a hybrid and a Toyota RAV4. The drop in fuel economy while speeding up from 55 to 65 was around 5 to 8 mpg. Increasing the speed to 75 reduced fuel efficiency by an additional 5 to 8 mpg.

Overall, speeding up from 55 mpg to 75 is like moving from a small car to a large SUV. Beyond fuel issues, going too fast is a safety risk. Avoid hard acceleration and braking whenever possible. In commonly found studies, frequent bursts of acceleration and braking reduced an old Toyota Camry’s mileage by 2 to 3 mpg. Once up to speed on the motorway, try to keep a consistent speed.

What is the Impact of Carrying Stuff on the Roof?

At motorway speeds, more than around 50 percent of your engine power goes to overcoming aerodynamic drag. Do not add to that by carrying stuff you do not need on the roof. Studies have documented fuel economy tests on the motorway with a Nissan Altima and a Toyota RAV4 with a roof rack, tail-hitch rack, and a roof-top box.

Hauling two mountain bikes on the roof had the biggest influence. The Altima lost around 13 mpg, going from 46 mpg down to just 33. The RAV4 lost around 7 mpg, dropping to 32 mpg from 39 mpg. There is even a loss when driving with the empty roof rack installed. The Altima dropped 5 mpg while the Toyota lost 2 mpg.

The Nissan lost 12 mpg with the bikes on the hitch-mounted rack, while the RAV4 lost only 5 mpg. The bikes stuck out to the sides of the sedan, which created more drag. They were mostly hidden behind the wider, boxier RAV4’s body.

The roof-top box resulted in a 9 mpg decrease for the Altima, and a 5 mpg drop for the RAV4. Overall, the aerodynamic drag does not hurt the boxier RAV4 as much as the sleeper Altima, so the study found. Going across town, this might not be an issue. But on a cross-country drive on a day out with the family, with a carrier or rack on the roof will affect fuel costs and you will have to deal with that annoying wind sound in your ear.

    AC or Open Windows?

The harder the AC system has to push itself, the worse the impact on fuel economy. When I looked at studies that measured the fuel-economy difference in a 2008 Ford, Honda Accord, and Subaru Forester, we found that fuel use with the AC on went up, correlating with higher outside temperatures.

At 55 F, there was not any huge difference. But when the study’s researchers measured again on days when the temperature was in the low 70s and high 80s, they got fewer miles per gallon with the AC on.

So in general, you can expect a drop from 1 to 4 mpg with the AC on. The effect of opening the windows at 65 mph was not measurable by researchers in this study. In any case, the AC helps dehumidify the cabin, which can contribute to keeping the driving focused and in control. I would think that is a good trade off.

Ultimately, fuel economy is important. The last thing any of us want to do is spend more money than we have to on fuel. Consistent driving at lower speeds will yield better fuel economy, alongside driving without anything strapped to the top of your car to create unnecessary drag. Your air conditioner will also reduce your fuel economy but on hot days it is totally worth it to keep you alert and safe as a driver.
